Nowadays we’re regularly bombarded with so many different types of makeup tutorials. They seem to be everywhere and range in style. Unfortunately, few of these tutorials give tips for women who are over the age of 40. As we age, we apply our makeup a little bit differently since the same techniques and products we used before might not compliment us as we get older. Similarly, there are some new techniques for applying makeup that we should add into your routines.
So, if you’ve been trolling the internet looking for tutorials on how to apply makeup to a more mature face, here are some makeup tips for women who are over 40.
Makeup Tips for Women Over 40
Don’t treat your eyelid area the same as you always have
The area around the eyes is very sensitive and has very delicate skin. Treating this area without care can lead to increased wrinkles and the development of more fine lines. Make sure to take extra time and patience when applying makeup on or around the eyelid area (both upper and lower areas). Transitioning to using more nude or lighter colors and less dark eyeshadows can also help to lift the eye area rather than dragging it down and making your eyes look smaller. There are times when a smokey eye and a darker eyelid shade might still want to be used. Natural makeup is usually the desired look for everyday looks for most women over 40.
Don’t neglect your eyebrows
Thankfully, getting older means we are less likely to need to spend time and money plucking our unruly brows. But it also means that if you don’t fill them in they can look sparse and neglected. Make sure to use a good brow product to fill in your eyebrows, specifically the tail area. A beautiful brow can frame the eyes and really does make a difference. Another option is to have one of the newer microblading or powder brow techniques done by a professional for a more permanent solution.
Invest in cream and liquid products
As you mature, your skin also tends to get drier, which means that powder-based products could emphasize fine-lines and make your skin look blotchy and uneven. However, there are still quite a few good powder products out there that I love for my foundation that work really well, such as the Laura Geller Balance and Brighten. Investing in some good cream and liquid products can help to keep your skin looking youthful. In addition, moisturizer can be your best friend to plump up dry skin and give a more dewy and youthful appearance. Preparing the skin to receive makeup is one of the most important step.
Pay attention to your blush placement
Usually, this is the area we are told to apply our blush. However, as we age it can create the appearance of more sagging skin. Work against gravity and apply blush more to the upper area of the cheekbones to give the illusion of a more lifted face. I like to use a cream blush to give a more dewy appearance. You can even use your lipstick as a blush if you don’t already own a cream blush product.
Choose a more hydrating lipstick formula
Matte lipsticks have been very trendy lately, but they aren’t always the friend of an older complexion. They can accentuate lip lines (I’ve experienced it firsthand). When using a matte lipstick, I prefer to add a touch of gloss on top for a more plumped up look. My preference is to choose lipsticks that have a shine or gloss to them from the start. There are tons on the market that have a more hydrating formula. This will keep your lips looking young and luscious instead of dry and shriveled.
Continue to work on your makeup application
It can be easy as we get older to give up on applying makeup or putting in the effort to change our routine. Just because you might not be able to use the same products that you used to doesn’t mean that there aren’t products out there that can work wonders for a more mature complexion. Keep trying new things and changing up your techniques until you find what works best for you.
We are all beautiful with or without our makeup. Some of us just like to wear makeup to enhance our inner beauty. Whatever you choose, I hope it makes YOU happy.

Great tips! I’m not much of a matt lipstick fan either- always want a little shine.

Yes, shine is good. I think I’ll leave the mattes for the 20 and 30 something ladies. Stacie xo
