Have you ever thought about covering your grays at home? Have you wondered if you could pull off this task in the comfort of your own home for a fraction of what you pay at the salon? I feel lucky that despite having recently turning 52 years old that I still have a really small percentage of gray hair. However, I have noticed in the past year that the gray hairs have started to multiply. And if I’m going to be honest here, they’re not really gray. They seem to be silver and sparkly and attract more attention than I care to admit.
I prefer to cover my grays myself at home in the evening when salons are closed because I like to do things on my own schedule. Home hair color is so easy to do these days. I really think that anyone can do it. I recently picked up Schwarzkopf Keratin Color in the shade Cappuccino at my local Walmart store. I can get younger looking hair for $9.97 and about 30 minutes of my time. Can’t beat that!
The Schwarzkopf Keratin Color can be found on the hair color aisle at Walmart. It’s available in 20 different shades from blonde to black.
I chose the shade Cappuccino to match or enhance my natural dark brunette hair. This is a permanent hair color that contains skin flattering pigments.
Everything that you need to color your hair is contained in the box.
This is my before picture… You can see that I get most of my gray hairs around my hairline. I do have some in my part as well. Follow along to see how I cover the grays with the Schwarzkopf Keratin Color.
The directions state to apply the Keratin Hair Color on dry unwashed hair. After donning the plastic gloves I start with Step 1 which is pre-treating the ends of my hair for even color results.
2. For Step 2 I mix the Color Cream into the bottle of Developer Lotion. This bottle serves as the applicator bottle as well, which is convenient.
3. I used a comb to part my hair and then added the solution to the hair along the part. I massaged it in with my gloved fingers. I continued to repeat this over and over until all of my roots were covered. I like to go back in at the end and add a little bit of extra product around my hairline.
4. Once all of my roots were covered for 20 minutes I applied the remaining solution to the ends of my hair. To do this I put my hair in a ponytail first. This helps me to keep the hair color away from my face and everything neat and tidy (I didn’t get too messy). I massage the color well and hang out for 10 more minutes. Total time for processing is about 30 minutes.
5. At the end of the processing time, I applied warm water to the hair and worked it into a lather. I then rinsed thoroughly until the water ran clear. Afterwards I massaged Keratin Care Complex Conditioner into my hair and left it in for 2 minutes and then rinsed thoroughly. I usually get two uses out of the conditioner bottle. Most people will get additional uses, but my hair is so thick and long.
My after picture… You can see that this product gave me 100% gray coverage. I can now confidently pull my hair back or wear it in a ponytail (this happens a few times a week). My hair feels soft and silky and looks extra shiny. I don’t have any hair breakage. I recommend this product if you want to color your hair or just do a root touch up at home like I did.
What do you think of Schwarzkopf Keratin Color? Would you color your hair at home? You can check out the available shades here.

I do not and would not color my hair at home because it’s red and that color is tough to get right. But Vidal Sassoon used to use Schwarzkopf pigments as the color conditioner on my hair, and I adored their shades.

Yes, I imagine that red can be a trickier shade. They’ve used Schwarzkopf at my salon in the past as well. Stacie xo

I love how perfectly it covered your greys along your hairline. I need color for my part and hairline before I feel like going to the salon. This would be so helpful.

I used one from this brand last time I colored and I loved it. I bought a cheaper brand the other day and thinking it’s going on the shelf for a more desperate time and going to find if I can my color I used the last time. It matched Great also to rest of my hair. I did same method u used. I think it was called Praline. CVS here had a few colors but not what I needed no will head to Walmart they will have a bigger selection my Drugstores r smaller ones here. Also I have a lot more grey than u do and it covered them all Great. I would be completely grey by my age of 49 if I didn’t color it runs in the family and this that don’t color r grey or white now. I can’t do it yet anyway. Thanks a bunch.

I’m so glad to hear that this worked well for you too. I honestly think it’s one of the best I’ve used at home. I’m right there with you on covering the grays for now. It helps with my denial that I’m aging. LOL! Have a fabulous weekend! Stacie xo
