Are you thinking of updating your home office? Or maybe you don’t have an office and would like to add one to your home? I love a refresh to any space to make it more inviting. And because my taste changes every few years, I don’t like to spend a ton of money of decorating any room. With that being said, I also like sturdy, high quality items that can withstand whatever I dish out (within reason). Read on for my home office remodel ideas…
I will start by sharing what my office looked like before I started my remodel.
The first thing that I did was to list my old furniture on Facebook Marketplace. Everything sold right away because the items were in perfect, like-new condition. Next thing I did was to order custom curtains to soften up the room a little bit. In hindsight, I probably wouldn’t order custom and would have just found something ready-made because I didn’t get too creative in the look. I wanted something sheer that would allow a lot of natural light to flow into the room.
Next I ordered a fairly neutral colored wood desk. After searching high and low for months, I ended up choosing a small dining room table because I like to spread out when I’m working. I also use my desk for crafts and more. Getting a dining table is a bonus because if I ever need any extra seating for dinner guests, I can just move the table out and into another area of the house.
I ordered a few items from IKEA for my furniture and had them assembled by the company called Task Rabbit. I found a qualified “tasker” to come to my home to do the assembly. It’s something that can be marriage saving, so I highly recommend them. They’re all over the country. In hindsight, I think I might just find items online, such as the drawers that are pictured below that are even more affordable than IKEA. I did change out the knobs on the display case that are a little more feminine than the ones that came with the furniture.
I added a simple monotone rug for simplicity for now. I might change it out later, but that’s easy to do. I bought a swivel office chair that’s nice and padded for comfort so I can spend a lot of time working if I need to. Because of my work, I need a place to keep clothing items that will stay fresh and pressed for photos. I bought a pretty garment rack that also has shelves for storage of accessories of whatever office things I want to use it for. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a rack in the silver tones. I ended up buying the one pictured that is gold and had my husband spray paint all of the metal for me. It’s now a beautiful nickel tone and fits into the vibe of the room perfectly.
I think the last thing item to mention is a pretty comfy chair that I ordered for my reading corner. I like to come into my office early in the morning and drink a coffee and take care of emails. I chose a more modern style than what I had before. The chair also has gold metal legs, but it’s a pretty subtle color of metal. I may have my husband paint them in the future.
I found a piece of artwork for the wall that I’m still undecided about. I found it on clearance at my local Home Goods and it looks pretty good with the chair. It also adds some subtle color to the room, along with some greenery plants and a cute metal side table.
Below are the items that are in my new home office remodel. It’s a work in progress for a few more weeks. Click on any of the numbers in the photo to link to anything that you might be interested in.
I like the way everything has turned out so far. I now need to get a new chandelier to replace the old brown ceiling fan and then I should be set for a while. Let me know what you think!

Love the outcome! Although the “before” was already awesome – I’m quite partial to neutrals so I really love the makeover. Thanks for sharing this!

Thanks so much! I love the old bright colors, but sometimes it could be a bit overwhelming. Plus, I wasn’t feeling the counter height work space anymore. Stacie xo
