Love is in the air! It may still be February, but the spring wedding season is right around the corner. Spring is actually my favorite season of the year. I love welcoming the warmer temperatures, the sprouting of the flowers in the garden and the longer daylight hours. With that in mind, I’ve done a roundup post for you sharing some great options for spring wedding guest dresses. These can all be worn for other occasions, such as showers, luncheons, date nights and more. Let me know if you have a favorite from my choices.
Let’s start with some unwritten rules for what women should and shouldn’t wear as a guest at a wedding. I think some are good guidelines. However, I think some of these are outdated.
Rule #1: Never wear white. This is the oldest rule in the book. Unless the dress code specifically asks for it, you must avoid white at all costs. You don’t want to come across as trying to upstage the bride. This rule also extends to creams, off-whites, and shades that are too close to white. I think this is one of the outdated rules because I love a cream colored outfit, especially in warm climates.
Rule #2: Respect the dress code. If the invitation has a dress code, stick to it. You wouldn’t want to show up in a casual sundress at a black-tie wedding. But if no dress code is specified, consider the venue and time of day to guide your outfit choice. For example, a beach wedding would call for something light and airy, while an evening affair may require something more formal.
Rule #3: Avoid overly revealing outfits. Weddings are typically family events with guests of all ages. A plunging neckline or a super short hem may not be the best choice. It’s always better to err on the side of modesty.
Rule #4: Comfort is king. Remember, weddings are typically long events. You might be sitting, standing, dancing, and, of course, eating! So, try to prioritize comfort alongside style. Choose breathable fabrics, sensible shoes (or bring a comfy pair to change into), and avoid anything too tight or constrictive.
