Skincare Tips for Dry Skin

September 1, 2020

Dry skin? Just because the weather is warm doesn’t mean you should be without a healthy skincare routine for your dry skin. Whether it’s bitter cold or extremely hot, snow or sun, you need to know what products to use and most importantly, to use them regularly. It seems that due to common misconceptions, many people skip out on applying lotions, serums, oils and creams due to the fear of a greasy appearance weighing you down. Some think it will cause clogged pores that cause blemishes and breakouts.

When it comes to warm weather skincare, I’m all about the “less is more” kind of approach. Unlike those thicker, richer products we use during cooler temperatures, our warm weather skin care needs are much different and need to be addressed differently.

Skincare Tips for Dry Skin in Warm Weather

Switching Up Your Favs

Now this doesn’t mean you should throw away that jar of your favorite extra moisturizing facial cream. It just means you may want to put it aside when the temperatures start rising and switch it up with a more lightweight product. Just because a product is “lightweight” doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t provide you with the much needed moisture your skin deserves. Look for products that not only say “lightweight” but “moisturizing” or even “hydrating” in place of the heavier, thicker products.

What Better Time To Start Double Cleansing

No wonder why many of us skin care specialists recommend the act of double cleansing to our clients, friends and family… it really makes a difference in the appearance of your skin. During those hotter days your skin has excess oil, grime, sunscreen and even for many, makeup residue clogging your pores. Many people don’t do the greatest job cleansing which can cause acne breakouts and blemishes.

The process of double cleansing can be done up to twice a day, although many people (including myself), prefer at night after a long day. The first cleansing product should be an oil (yes you read that right. Oil removes oil) to breakdown and remove products, excess oils and sweat. The second cleanser should be a lightweight, gentle cleanser that addresses your specific skin care needs… fighting acne, hydrating dry skin, anti aging etc. Whatever residue that may have been left after the first cleanser will be removed helping you achieve cleaner, healthier looking skin.

Always Wear Your SPF

Regardless of rain, sleet, snow and sunshine, you need to protect your skin from the harmful sun’s UVA/UVB rays that can cause premature aging, burns and even certain cancers. Although you may think in certain situations your skin is safe from harm, you’re wrong. Regardless the weather you’re able to do damage to your skin and unless it’s the middle of the night, always stay prepared. Keep a thicker sunscreen for the cooler temps and a more lightweight lotion or spray for warmer weather.

use sunscreen every day

Exfoliate

You may not think exfoliation has anything to do with warmer weather but it really does. When you regularly exfoliate your skin you’re removing all those dead skin cells, dirt and debris that pile up. Sometimes these aren’t thoroughly removed with simple cleansing of the face. Exfoliation has the ability to unclog your pores and leave you with brighter looking skin. It also works in allowing products to absorb more since there isn’t anything blocking the way. Remember that there are both physical and chemical methods to exfoliate the skin.

Products

When it comes to the type of products I recommend during these warmer months, I like products that not only are effective, but they help you achieve healthier looking skin without weighing you down. If you don’t want to use a face full of products on warmer days, at least use products that have the ability to hydrate, moisturize and protect your skin. Use a gentle cleanser, serum, eye cream and a moisturizing spf on those days.

When it comes to the products and their feel and consistency, it really is all about preference. For example, wearing eye cream on a hot day can leave you sweating a bit more, ruining your makeup application and causing raccoon eyes. For many it causes a greasy, heavy feel that’s awful when the temperature is rising. That’s where eye ‘gels’ come into play. With the same concept as eye cream, eye gel still hydrates and works its magic. But instead of feeling oily and heavy, you’re left with a lightweight feel that helps keep makeup in place and is also more comfortable throughout the day.

Don’t let the wrong products stop you from enjoying your day or ruining your makeup application. Be prepared and have a rotation of products on hand for not only cooler temps but those hotter days as well to keep your skin happy, healthy and satisfied.

Good tips! My dry skin tends to appear during the winter. One would think the desert would be dry for summer, but I am more oily. Thanks!

Thank you! Yes, I think some people are more oily in the summer from the heat and sweating. Lots of middle aged ladies are dry year round regardless due to hormone changes. Thanks for stopping by! Stacie xo

Hi Stacie, just amazing tips and it is pretty useful to me! Truly speaking, I was so afraid of applying any product on my face because it will cause clogged pores. And today your blog helped in clearing my misconceptions. Thanks a lot!

I’m glad that you discussed how we should use the right products for our skin. One of my closest friends developed skin cancer because she refused to look after her own skin health and I want to avoid being in the same situation. I just hope that she’ll be able to seek treatment that can help her recover.

Hey Stacie, Usually in winter my skin gets dry and in summers or in other seasons it stays normal. Loved the tips though.
