Shaving is something that most of do to get nice smooth skin. I’ve been partaking in this task for almost 40 years now. I’ve used a variety of products to get a nice close shave and silky smooth skin. I recently had the opportunity to try a new method of softening the hair to prep for shaving. This would be the Somersets Shaving Oils.
Somersets shave oils are formulated for both women and men. They use high quality natural ingredients, such as tea tree, aloe vera, lavender and rosemary. They contain no drying soaps or chemical foams. The result is no redness, irritation, bumps or nicks… just silky soft skin.
*PR samples
The pink bottle is the Extra Sensitive formula for legs and underarms. The blue bottle is the Extra Delicate formula which is specially formulated for women’s extra delicate bikini area.
There are also 3 different shaving oils for men. I have samples and plan to give them to my husband to see if he finds this type of shaving something that he likes.
How to Use:
For best results shave in a warm shower or bath. Ideally exfoliate once or twice a week as this helps deep cleanse your skin and discourages ingrowing hairs.
Wet skin with warm water, apply 3-5 drops of Somersets Shaving Oil per leg, 1-2 drops for each underarm, and massage into skin. Then shave slowly and carefully in the direction of your hair’s growth. Rinse your blade frequently to help keep it clean and to prevent clogging. Keep your skin wet during the shave as this helps the oil provide lubrication and protection.
For electric shavers, apply 1 to 2 drops of Shaving Oil and massage in before shaving as normal.
Afterwards rinse with cool water, you do not need to rinse off all the oil (it will help keep your skin supple), pat your skin dry and then apply a moisturizer to help soothe and hydrate your skin.
For dry shaving on-the-go, massage in 4-5 drops of Shaving Oil and shave carefully. Pat your skin dry afterwards.
About:
These shave oils are made in Henley-on-Thames England and are now available in the United States. Somersets can be found in Walgreens, Target.com, Drugsto
Verdict
I’ve used the Somersets Shave Oils for women a few times. They have a strong botanical scent to them, which isn’t my personal favorite type of scent. I got a nice close shave on my legs and my skin felt well hydrated and soft after use. On my first use I had to clean out the blades on my razor after every few swipes with the razor since the oils accumulate between the blades. That being said, I used way more product than was recommended and this was resolved when using the recommended 3 drops per leg. Overall, I like this product. The only con for me is the scent. However, this is a matter of preference.

They do have a strong scent, but fortunately I’m OK with it. My problem really is the clogging of my razor. I shave in the shower and even putting my razor under the showerhead after every swipe didn’t unclog the blades. I have to use shampoo on the blades to clean them, but doing that after every swipe got to be too much for me. My signif other, Jeff, loves it and has no problem with clogging but then he shaves at the sink. It definitely gives a closer shave than regular shaving gel. I wish there was a way to get it not to clog.

I agree! I hate to ruin expensive razors. I’m glad to know that it’s not just me who felt his way. I shave a spot then wipe on a washcloth followed by a rinse under the water. It works, but can be time consuming… Stacie xo

On a washcloth! What a great tip, Stacie! I’ll try that. After reading your post, I used the oil again today when I showered. As usual, it gives me a great shave but it is so wasteful in terms of using a lot of water and taking time. I think the washcloth may help. tyvm!

Hmm the scent would have to be something I could smell for myself to determine if it was too much for me. Sometimes scents don’t bother me, and sometimes they are awful!
Stacie says
Same here. Some of the more natural botanical ones bother me. If it smells like food, I usually love it. LOL! Stacie xo

I use Coconut Oil to shave usually because I prefer it! I get nasty razor burn with gels and creams. This is right up my alley

I’m definitely going to whip out the coconut oil sometime and give it a try as well. Thanks for the recommendation. Stacie xo

I used to shave using a shaving cream, but then I stopped using it and switched to Somerset Original. The scent doesn’t bother me at all, I like how it feels cool and fresh on my skin after shaving. Have you ever made a review about homemade shaving cream? Would want to know your verdict about it.
