Have you heard that gardening can be therapeutic? I completely agree with that statement. One of my favorite places to be is out doing garden work early in the morning. I’ve been keeping a garden during the spring and summer months for about six years now. I started with a raised bed garden at my previous home. I then switched to container gardening. This past week I finally made the switch to a combination of a raised container garden, giving me the best of both worlds.
The funny thing about me and gardening is that I’m absolutely petrified of worms and other creepy crawlers. I actually have a rather large yard and have plenty of space to garden. However, I still choose to do a raised garden bed and containers to keep things close to the house and make for easier watering and less of the creepy crawly stuff. My dream would be to have a bed built that has a soaker hose system.
This year I started most of my plants in containers on the patio. They’ve been growing so fast with all of the rain and the perfect temperatures that we’ve had so far this spring. Just this week I moved to a beautiful, yet simple raised bed container that I purchased online. I love the depth of this planter as well as the classic metal look. This one is over six feet long too, so I have plenty of space for growing my vegetables and herbs.
We really enjoy eating figs at my house (hello charcuterie board), so this year I decided to grow a fig tree (I’ve heard that they’re easy to grow). It’s supposed to bear fruit the first year. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I will probably transplant this tree to the ground at some point, but for now it looks nice in this pretty blue pottery.
I also have lots of flowers this year that I’m growing in containers. This is my first year to grow Dahlias from bulbs. They’re very hardy and are producing gorgeous blooms. I will probably make this an annual crop.
I find gardening to be very therapeutic. I really enjoy going outside and tending to my plants. It’s a peaceful environment. My granddaughter and I spend time out in the garden together a few days a week. I can’t wait for her to be old enough to help me with it. Hopefully it will be one of our bonds.
